California Youth Sports Concussions LawPrintable

Effective January 1, 2017, California Assembly Bill 2007 mandated concussion awareness and protocols as a minimum for youth sports.

The law outlines the responsibilities of league administrators and coaches. The law does not reference referees.

  • A youth suspected of sustaining a concussion / head injury can no longer participate on that day unless cleared in writing by a health care professional.
  • Parents and players must be given concussion information annually.
  • Coaches and league administrators must take a concussion awareness course annually.
  • The league must adopt procedures to ensure compliance with the return-to-play protocols.
